We love O2’s latest ‘Make Them Giants’ animated production to promote this year’s Rugby World Cup. Directed by Elliott Dear, the same illustrator behind John Lewis’s 2013 Christmas TV ad ‘The Bear and the Hare’ it’s a departure from the usual testosterone fuelled promotions normally associated with the beautiful game.
The idea behind the animation is that support from fans can help boost the England team during the tournament, making them giants. The use of such a classic 2D animation style is to broaden the appeal of the O2 promotion to engage a broader audience , women, children and those who are not necessarily die-hard fans of rugby.
Having grown up on Disney classics and Looney Tunes many of us remain captivated by classic 2D animation that takes us back to our childhood. O2 are latest in a long line of high street brands to cash in on this by creating short animated TV productions to promote products, services and events.
